FOR SMARTER BUSINESSES THAT LIKE TO THINK FORWARDS, DEALING WITH SURPLUS IS NO LONGER A PROBLEM… IT’S AN UNDENIABLE OPPORTUNITY.

FOR PEOPLE WITH THE POWER TO MAKE CHANGE HAPPEN, THAT OPPORTUNITY IS GOLDEN.

Born through collaboration, the unique Luminary Programme takes this opportunity and turns it into everyday advantage. It shines a light on ways to make intelligent surplus management an asset for business, a benefit for the planet, and a force for good in communities everywhere.

The programme has been conceived and developed by Company Shop Group, funded with £1.96m awarded by Defra specifically to help the group’s bold ambition of harnessing hard-to-reach surplus.

Devised and delivered by the brightest minds in supply chain surplus, it invites visionary thinkers from like-minded businesses to learn together and share ideas, and to develop new ways to inspire and influence others. The reward for participants will be the satisfaction of contributing to a transformative change in the way business thinks and works: a change whose positive legacy will last forever.

The Format

BACKGROUND VIDEOS

Our compelling films introduce each module and its topic, and give a useful breakdown of its purpose, content and activities.

EXPERT TALKS

These films represent an exclusive opportunity to gain insight and inspiration from respected thought leaders.

The featured personalities are experts in their respective fields, and include John Marren, the entrepreneur and founder of The Company Shop Group.

ACTIVITIES

Specially developed activities will help you develop a wide range of advanced business and people skills, many of them transferable, and all of them essential for completing the Luminary Programme.

These include skills like identifying opportunities, disruptive thinking and influencing others. Ultimately, the skills will help you implement radical positive change in your own organisation, as well as helping your personal career progression.

MENTORING CALL

The online mentoring call is a chance for you and your fellow Luminaries to share any ideas and questions with a dedicated mentor, and also share the outputs of your weekly activities.

You’ll enjoy the chance to speak with – and learn from – industry leading experts. Your call can be recorded, edited and saved, or even published on a special Learning and Development platform too, making it an invaluable tool for rapid and collective progression.

THE MODULES

The programme’s creators are leading figures and thinkers in surplus management, with unrivalled knowledge in this increasingly important commercial discipline. Together, they’ve devised a step-by-step learning and development experience that simplifies your journey by consolidating it into four consecutive modules.

Our first module is FLOODLIGHT – designed to deliver a thorough appreciation of the wider context of our collaborative mission.

FLOODLIGHT casts its light over the problem of waste from an industry perspective, leaving until later any in-depth analysis at a company level.

By starting with this broader overview of what’s really going on with UK waste, you’ll gain a far better grasp of the ways you and fellow Luminaries can help spearhead change.

Activities here cover areas including distilling your thinking, the Five Whys Model, and a face-to-face meeting with a mentor at your workplace. A unique chance to talk about your organisation’s journey towards change.

Your interest in The Luminary Programme already demonstrates a willingness to explore beyond and think more freely - that’s a very good start.

Our second module - KALEIDOSCOPE - builds on this, and it will give you the skills and confidence to challenge norms, shake things up, and discover different ways of working...

Better ways of working.

In this module, you’ll explore disruptive thinking models and hear from an expert in this subject, and your activities will include a ‘reverse brainstorm’, an imaginative thinking exercise, and a fascinating How.wow.now.no matrix to complete.

You’ll also cover ‘mindsets and difference thinking’ in this module’s expert-led mentoring call.

TRANSFORMATION LIES AT THE HEART OF THE LUMINARY PROGRAMME...

...which means that change management will be an essential requirement inside your own organisation, with you in control.

This module - SWITCH - covers topics like decision-making, overcoming barriers and influencing those around you, and it will help to develop the various techniques and power of persuasion you need for effecting change. Activities include worksheets on areas like changing systems and mindsets, alignment with compliance frameworks, and the so-called four quadrants of Friend, Ally, Annoyer, Adversary – an essential tool for exploring and managing stakeholder relationships.

WITH THE PREVIOUS MODULES COMPLETED AND THE GROUNDWORK NOW IN PLACE, this is the point from which your own organisation’s future relationship with surplus really starts to take shape.

SHINE combines mentoring with coaching support to help you develop and implement a relevant and workable plan. Tools you’ll be using include a KPI Matrix, Change Pathway Model, Empathy Map and Story Capture Plan.

This more personalised module acknowledges the fact that from here onwards, any input and interventions need to be meticulously tailored to your own organisation. And with our ongoing support during and following this module it really is your time to SHINE!

THE SURPLUS SLIDER

We should have stopped thinking about waste a long time ago. We’re basically wasting time and energy when we could be getting rich.

It’s time to stop worrying about waste, accept that it’s an unavoidable commercial and environmental nightmare, and get on with running our business with one single goal: maximising profit.

The sooner we stop worrying about waste, the better. It’s ugly, bulky and wrecks the planet, and what can one business do in the grand scheme of things anyway? Absolutely nothing. Forget waste and focus on things we can change, like making more money.

The sooner we stop worrying about waste, the better. It’s ugly, bulky and damages the planet, but what difference can one business make on its own? Nothing. We need to stop letting waste distract us from the things we can change, like making more money.

The sooner we stop worrying about waste, the better. It’s ugly, bulky and bad for the planet, but there’s very little difference one business can make on its own. We should stop letting waste distract us from things we can change, like making more money.

When we finally stop worrying about waste, the quicker we can accept that it’s ugly, bulky and bad for the planet. There’s not much difference one business make on its own anyway, so we should stop letting waste distract us from the things we can change more easily, like commercial performance.

When we eventually stop worrying about waste, the quicker we can accept that it’s ugly, bulky and bad for the planet. There’s a limit to what one business can achieve anyway, so we should stop letting waste distract us from the things we can change more easily, like commercial performance.

The quicker we admit the fact that waste is ugly, bulky and a disaster for the planet, the sooner we’ll realise we can never make a difference. We should accept waste is a pain and stop letting it distract us from the things we can change more easily.

The quicker we can accept that waste is ugly, bulky and bad for the planet, the sooner we’ll realise there’s no point trying to make a difference. We should accept waste is a pain and stop letting it distract us from the things we can change more easily.

There’s absolutely nothing we can do about waste, so there’s really no point spending time and energy on dreaming up ways to deal with it more effectively. The fact is it’s ugly and bulky and bad for the planet, so let’s just accept the hassle and expense it means for our business.

There’s nothing we can do about waste, so there’s really no point spending time and energy on dreaming up ways to deal with it more effectively. Let’s just accept the damage it does to our business.

There’s very little we can do about waste, so I can’t see much point using up time and energy trying to deal with it more effectively. We might as well accept the damage it does to our business.

There’s only so much we can do about waste, so we might as well accept it’s a problem and learn to live with the challenges it means for our business.

There isn’t much we can do about waste – it’s just a nuisance. All we can do is handle it carefully and allow for the extra hassle and expense it negatively impacts our business with.

Waste is waste: there isn’t much we can do about it, except handle it carefully and allow for the extra hassle and expense it means for our business.

Waste is waste: there isn’t much we can do about it, except handle it carefully and allow for the extra challenge it means for our business.

Waste is waste: nothing worth paying any attention to really. If that wasn’t the case, someone would have come up with ways of managing the challenge it presents.

Waste is waste: nothing worth paying any attention to really. If things were different, someone would have come up with better ways of managing it.

Waste is just waste – it’s not something I ever pay much attention to. Perhaps if things were different, we’d come up with some better ways of managing the challenge it presents.

Waste or surplus – it’s all the same really. Perhaps if we could change our way of thinking and see it less negatively instead, things could be different.

Waste or surplus – it’s pretty much all the same. Perhaps if we could change our way of thinking and see it more positively instead, things could be different.

Waste, surplus, or whatever you choose to call it – it’s more or less all the same. But if we could change our way of thinking and see it in a positive light, things could be different.

Waste, surplus, or whichever way you explain it – it’s more or less all the same. But if we could change our way of thinking and see it in a positive light, is there a chance things could be better?

If we see waste as surplus instead, suddenly they’re not the same thing. We can then try to react more positively to it, and it’s even possible that perhaps one day we go as far as identifying ways to make things better.

If we see waste as surplus, there’s a really important difference. We can start to react more positively to it, and one day we might identify ways to make something good come from it.

If we see waste as surplus instead, we can start to react more positively to it. Who knows, perhaps one day we’ll identify ways to make something good come from surplus.

If we see waste as surplus instead, suddenly it becomes more positive. In the not-too-distant future it’s likely that we will have developed ways to make something good come from surplus.

Ironically, seeing waste as just rubbish could actually be a waste of an opportunity. It won’t be long before we reframe it as surplus, then develop ways of making something positive and good come from it.

You could argue that surplus might be an opportunity, if only we can rethink it. Under the right circumstances, there’s scope for surplus to improve people’s lives and impact on our business without necessarily damaging the planet.

If we change the way we think about it, surplus is an opportunity. It has the potential to improve people’s lives and impact on our business too, without necessarily damaging the planet.

This is an opportunity to see surplus as a potential raw material. Once I’d changed the way I think, I reached a point where I could see that carefully managed surplus needn’t damage the planet and could actually bring benefits.

This is a great opportunity to see surplus as a new raw material. Once I’d got my head around thinking differently, I realised that carefully managed surplus needn’t damage the planet and it can actually improve lives and boost our business too.

Surplus is an exciting new raw material. Once I’d flipped my way of thinking on its head, I came to realise that carefully managed surplus needn’t damage the planet and can improve lives and boost our business too.

Surplus is one of our most exciting new raw materials. Once I’d flipped my way of thinking on its head, I realised that carefully managed surplus needn’t damage the planet and can improve lives and boost our business too.

Surplus is the world’s most exciting new raw material. All it took was for me to flip my thinking on its head, then I quickly realised surplus has the power to transform lives and really boost our business without ever harming the planet.

It’s simple: surplus is, without doubt, the most exciting new raw material there is. As soon as I’d seen the light, I knew it had the power to transform lives and turbocharge our business without ever harming the planet.
