The Problem Tree

Question 1 of 3.

Start with the trunk by defining the Big Problem you are addressing.

Using the checklist below write a 1-2 sentence statement that answers the guiding questions.

• Is your Big Problem formulated as a negative statement?
• Did you avoid “need”, “should” or similar, to not embed a solution?
• Have you captured the geographical scope of the Big Problem?
• Does the Big Problem statement include statistical data supporting your statement?
• From all possible problem formulations, do you feel that the one you have selected for the tunk is the one that moves you the most?
• Can your big problem statement be easily reversed into a Big Vision bu using a positive formulation and does it sound right to you as well?

Question 2 of 3.

Next, think about the branches of the tree which are the consequences of the Big Problem.

Using the checklist below, write 3-4 statements that answer the guiding questions.

• Have you considered different types of consequences – social, political, economic, etc?
• Would they be convincing for key stakeholders who are able to influence the Big Problem?
• Do your statements include statistical data?

Question 3 of 3.

Finally move to the roots of the tree which are the root causes of the Big Problem.

Using the checklist below, write 3-4 statements that answer the guiding questions.

• Do your root cause statements capture systems where the root cause is present?
• Have you considered any non-obvious systems as well?
• Do your root cause statements include geographical scope?
• Are your root cause statements supported by statistical data?
• Have you selected and marked one root cause system that you will focus on for the rest of the course?
