The 76-year-old Dan McCafferty was the founding member and original lead vocalist of the Scottish hard rock band Nazareth.
Nazareth’s longtime bassist Pete Agnew shared the information on the group’s Facebook page.
He wrote, “Dan passed away today at 12:40.
“I’ve never had to make a sadder announcement than this one.
I have lost my best friend, Maryann and the family have lost a beautiful, devoted husband and father, and the world has lost one of the finest singers who has ever lived.
I’m too unhappy right now to add anything else.”
1946 saw the birth of McCafferty in Dunfermline, Scotland.
He and Agnew established Nazareth there in 1968 along with drummer Darrell Sweet and guitarist Manny Charlton.
Both the band’s 1971 self-titled debut album and its follow-up, 1972’s Exercises, failed to reach the top of the charts.
The 1973 single Razamanaz gave Nazareth their first taste of success; it peaked at No. 11 on the U.K. singles chart and reached No. 157 on the Billboard 200.
The sales of Nazareth’s following two albums, Rampant (1974) and Loud ‘n’ Proud (1973), were both strong.
However, it was 1975’s Hair of the Dog, which peaked at number 20 on the Billboard 200 and gave rise to a Top 10 song on the Hot 100 with a cover of the Everly Brothers’ “Love Hurts,” that marked the rockers’ real global breakthrough.
The remainder of the record, especially its title tune, which Guns N’ Roses covered, became a cornerstone of ’70s hard rock.
In 2013, McCafferty made his departure from the group official, citing a chronic obstructive lung illness that made breathing difficult for him.
2014’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Telephone, Nazareth’s 23rd album, served as his final release with the group.
