Obituary | How Did David Gallagher Die?
The 24-year-old man who died Sunday after being injured on the rocky embankment beneath the Ledyard Bridge in Hanover has been identified as David Gallagher, a 2020 graduate of Dartmouth College who played lacrosse.
Gallagher was in town with his family for the Class of 2020 commencement, which had been postponed due to the pandemic.
The Hanover Fire Department was notified at 1:48 a.m. Sunday and responded with police and Dartmouth College safety and security personnel. Gallagher, from Downingtown, Pa., was brought to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release from Hanover fire and police.
“The Dartmouth community is deeply saddened by this terrible tragedy,” a Dartmouth spokeswoman said in a statement. “President (Philip) Hanlon has been in touch with the parents of David Gallagher to share his condolences on their profound loss.”

The commencement ceremony was held Saturday and attended by more than 800 graduates, according to the college.
Gallagher played all four seasons as No. 15 on the lacrosse team, according to Dartmouth Athletics.
